Judaism
Over the past fortnight, years 4, 5 and 6 have been enjoying learning about Judaism and how Jews live their lives. Through the course of this topic, one of the highlights was visiting the synagogue in Leicester, where we learned about the torah scrolls which were beautifully decorated with leather and silver. We found out about lots of the artefacts in the synagogue, including the remembrance wall. The bimah in the centre of the synagogue is where the torah is read. The men and women are usually separated in the synagogue.
For the rest of the week, we learnt about Shabbat and the meal Jews share on the Friday night when they have completed all their work. We also tried homemade challah bread and we tasted grape juice to represent the wine that Jews drink from the kiddish cup. We also created a sedar plate which is used at the Shabbat meal.
The mezuzahs were another thing that we made, they are hung on the doorposts of all Jewish houses they contain the first two paragraphs of the Shema , the most important prayer in the Jewish faith. We also performed a piece of drama with Mrs. Furlong Smith which was to do with the slaves in Egypt and when they were freed; it will be used in year six assembly.
Throughout this week we watched short clips about the family, God and beliefs.
