We really enjoyed learning about the Ancient Greeks because they invented many of the things we now use- such as the alphabet. We learnt about the first Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia. Also, we learnt about the theatre of Dionysis and what the different sections were called and what they were used for.
In the third week of our topic we designed and made an Ancient Greek theatre mask in clay - we had a choice between comedy and tragedy. The mouths had to be large, because in the days of the Ancient Greeks they didn’t have microphones to project their voices. We had to emphasize the facial expressions so if people couldn’t hear what was happening in the production, they would be able to tell from the characters face if it was a comedy or tragedy play. Class five also created Greek temples using art straws; the pillars could be any of the following: Ionic- curly, Doric- straight and Corinthian- really patterned.
In the last few days of our topic, Class 5, held a special Greek afternoon when we dressed up in ‘fashionable’ Ancient Greek clothing –togas made out of bed sheets and table clothes, we also could make and wear a head dress.
We tried some delicious Greek delicacies such as Fresh Fig, Grapes, Pitta Bread, Feta Cheese, Dried Apricots, Sweet Meats (Honey and Sesame Seeds), Dates and Olives. We filled in a sheet to say if we liked the food and we had to write down what it tasted like. Some people liked all of them, but others enjoyed just a few. Mrs. Simpson then read us the Greek myth of Odyseuss to end the afternoon. We think everyone enjoyed the afternoon- it was a great experience!
